German fishermen got more than they bargained for when they pulled a severed arm out of a river.
Police in Cologne said forensic experts believed the arm had been in the River Rhine for about a week.
They are now carrying out DNA tests and securing fingerprints.
A police spokeswoman said: "We think it belonged to a man due to its hairiness.
"Missing persons files are being examined and all possibilities remain open, from an accident, through suicide to murder."
