US comedy caper The House Bunny has made its debut at the top of UK and Ireland box office chart.

The film, which stars Anna Faris as a Playboy bunny thrown out of the mansion, took £894,198.

It nudged new entry Mirrors, a thriller starring Kiefer Sutherland, into second place with returns of £834,092.

City of Ember with Tim Robbins and Bill Murray was another debut film at number six, while Richard Gere drama Nights In Rodanthe came in at 10.

Last week's chart-topper, How To Lose Friends and Alienate People, starring Simon Pegg, slipped to number three.

Taken and Tropic Thunder also lost ground in the chart.

Musical movie Mamma Mia!, which has been a top 10 film for 14 weeks and has raked in a total of £65.1m, slid from number four to seven.

The House Bunny failed to top the North American box office when it opened in August.

The movie opened at number two behind Tropic Thunder, which was in pole position for a second week.
