Actor Al Pacino is to collect a career achievement award at the Rome Film Festival which starts on Wednesday.

The Oscar-winner's new film, Chinese Coffee, will launch the gala, while Italian screen legend Gina Lollobrigida will also be honoured.

The emphasis of this year's event will be European talent, with British film Easy Virtue - based on a Noel Coward play - premiering in the Italian city.

The festival, which will award a series of prizes, runs until 31 October.

Actor honours

Political film Good, by British director Vincente Amorim, is in the running for best film at the event alongside 19 other movies, chiefly from European film-makers.

Only one US film will take part in competition - Pride and Glory, starring Hollywood actor Edward Norton

Honours for best actor and actress will also be handed out, while Godfather star Pacino will also pick up an award on behalf of New York's Actors Studio.

The drama school is famous for teaching method acting, and since its foundation in 1947 has produced many famous graduates including Pacino, Robert De Niro and the late Paul Newman.

Other films which will be showcased out of competition at the festival include Huit/Eight, a project about world poverty involving Mexican star Gael Garcia Bernal and directors Wim Wenders, Gus Van Sant and Jane Campion.

Documentary Theatre of War - starring Meryl Streep as herself - will also be shown. It chronicles the staging of a New York production of Bertolt Brecht play Mother Courage.

The festival is set to close with the screening of Italian film L'Ultima Pulcinella.

It is the Italian capital's third annual film showcase.
