US singer-songwriter Randy Newman has postponed his European tour because he is suffering from severe back pain.

The 64-year-old musician said in a statement on his website that he had "severe limitations" caused by narrowed blood vessels in his neck and back.

Newman, whose first performance was due to take place in Berlin on Saturday, said he "deeply regretted" having to postpone the 18-date tour.

The singer won a best song Oscar in 2002 for the film Monsters Inc.

New material

He has been nominated for an Academy Award on 16 other occasions for his work on numerous film soundtracks, and has also picked up four Grammys.

Newman's hits include I Love LA and I Love To See You Smile.

"I like it so much in Europe, and I've always been treated so well," he added on his website message.

"I'll get there as soon as I can."

The singer's tour was to promote his album Harps and Angels, his first collection of new material in nine years.

Rescheduled dates for the 18 concerts will be announced in due course, including a performance at London's Royal Festival Hall which was scheduled for 19 November.
