Robert De Niro joined Daniel Craig on the red carpet as Bond film Quantum of Solace had its US premiere in New York.

Craig's co-star Jeffrey Wright was also in attendance as the 22nd official 007 movie made its American debut in aid of De Niro's Tribeca Film Institute.

Will and Grace star Debra Messing and Julia Stiles from The Bourne Identity also turned out for the screening.

Quantum of Solace opens in the US and Canada on Friday, two weeks after its release in the UK and Ireland.

The film, Craig's second Bond outing after 2006's Casino Royale, is currently top of the UK box office chart.

De Niro did not answer questions at Tuesday's event at the AMC Lincoln Square, telling reporters "there's something wrong with my throat".

'So violent'

While the latest Bond posed for photographers in Manhattan, one of his predecessors expressed doubts over where the franchise was heading.

In an interview with the Reuters news agency, former 007 Sir Roger Moore said he was "sad" the series "has turned so violent".

The 81-year-old did concede, however, that the films were "keeping up with the times". "It's what cinemagoers seem to want," he said.

Sir Roger, who was in New York himself last week to promote his autobiography, also admitted he had yet to see Quantum of Solace.
