An Essex firefighter is in trouble after he fled his duty station when he saw two mice.
The fireman locked up and drove back to HQ, telling colleagues he was too frightened to stay on his own at night.
Angry bosses ordered him to go back or face disciplinary charges, reports The Sun.
The officer, based at Harlow, returned to tiny Waltham Abbey station where he could muster retained colleagues in the event of a 999 call.
The Sun quotes a source at the Essex Fire and Rescue Service as saying: "It was hilarious. He had his leg pulled mercilessly. Senior officers went ballistic.
"The station was shut for two hours but luckily there were no calls."
An official spokesman said the matter was under review, while the Fire Brigade Union is also investigating.
