The Christmas family chocolate box has reportedly become the latest victim of the economic slump.

Cadbury has cut two old favourites - Crunchies and Dreams - from its popular Heroes selection, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Dreams and Crunchies are being replaced by Bournvilles and toffee Eclairs, which are said to be cheaper to make.

Last year Cadbury axed Time Outs and Picnics from the best-selling range, which offers miniature versions of Cadbury's leading bars.

Customers are not happy, though the company insists that it is merely trying to keep the growing army of dark chocolate fans happy.

"What do Cadbury's think they're playing at with their Heroes tins. There was no warning about the changes," said Mark Sumner, 33, from Liverpool.

"They're called Heroes for a reason - all the sweets are supposed to be favourites. But now all you get left at the end is a pile of unwanted Bournvilles and Eclairs."

A Cadbury spokesman could not confirm that the new additions were cheaper to make, and said that Bournvilles had replaced Dreams because black chocolate was now more popular than white.

"We are always looking to see what's in favour and what's out of favour," he said.

"We get feedback from the public every year, and it's impossible to create a selection that pleases everyone on the time."
