Actor Michael Pitt is in final negotiations to star opposite Steve Buscemi in the pilot for Martin Scorsese's new series 'Boardwalk Empire'.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the drama is based on the Nelson Johnson book of the same name and looks at the origins of Atlantic City, New Jersey in the 1920s.

'Boardwalk Empire' follows wheeler dealer businessman Nucky Johnson (Buscemi), with Pitt set to play his ambitious sidekick, Jimmy Darmody.
Scorsese will direct the pilot episode for the planned series, which will be shown on HBO in the US.

Pitt's other screen credits include 'Funny Games', 'The Village' and 'Murder by Numbers'.
