Nolan completes Toon switch

NEWCASTLE have wrapped up the £4million signing of Kevin Nolan.

Bolton accepted a bid from Toon boss Joe Kinnear yesterday, with the midfielder travelling to the north-east to discuss personal terms and have a medical today.

And now Nolan, 26, has put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year deal at St James' Park.

Nolan, who made 323 appearances for Bolton since 1999, will immediately come in for Joey Barton, who has been ruled out for 10 weeks with a broken foot.

The move has left Gary Megson frustrated, with the Bolton boss reluctant to discuss the deal at his weekly press conference.

He said: “For any more details you will have to go to the press office of the football club and they will let you know what we’re doing,” said the clearly-annoyed manager.

“That’s as far as I’m going to go with it.”

Kinnear admitted he was delighted to have brought in a much-needed reinforcement for his midfield.

He said: “When I heard there was a chance of getting Kevin I was determined we would pull out all of the stops to bring him here.

“He’s a player I think our fans will love. He’s a real inspirational player and a great character. He’s the sort of lad who never knows when he is beaten.

“He’s got a good eye for goal and has got bags of Premier League experience.

“I think he is going to be a very valuable player for us and someone who can help us climb back up the table.”

Wigan manager Steve Bruce has revealed a fee has been agreed with Newcastle for wantaway full-back Charles N'Zogbia.

The Frenchman has long been linked with a move away from St James' Park and is now refusing to play for Magpies manager Joe Kinnear after he mispronounced the player's name as 'insomnia' in a TV interview this week.

N'Zogbia is expected to complete a move to Wigan in the next 24 hours with Ryan Taylor moving in the other direction.

Bruce has been one of the busiest managers in the transfer window, with Wilson Palacios, Emile Heskey and Kevin Kilbane all leaving and Mido, Hugo Rodallega and Ben Watson arriving.

''Hopefully, by tomorrow it'll be four in and four out,'' Bruce told BBC Radio Five Live. ''We have agreed a fee with Newcastle and it's up to us now to convince the boy Wigan is the place for him; come and enjoy himself, come and kickstart his career if you like, where it seems to have gone a bit sour in the North East.''

N'Zogbia has previously voiced his desire to play for a top-four team and Bruce has urged the 22-year-old to follow in the footsteps of Palacios and Heskey and use Wigan as a stepping stone.

''A lot of people have done that, used Wigan as a platform - that's the way we go about trying to entice people to come to us,'' he continued.

''We're not going to try and sell (Wigan), I'm going to give him the truth, like we normally do and, if he wants to play for Arsenal, Tottenham, then come and be a big success for Wigan, like Palacios has done, Emile Heskey's done.

''There have been a lot who've used our club to further their career. We're realistic enough, and the chairman's realistic enough, to know that that's the way we go about it.

''I've seen his comments, we all want to play for Manchester United and Liverpool and all the rest of it; use us as a platform to get there.''

Derby midfielder Giles Barnes has joined Fulham on loan until the end of the season.

The London club also have an option to sign the 20-year-old on a permanent basis at the end of the season, according to their official website.

Barnes, who has represented England at both under-18s and under-19s level, came to the fore as a teenager in the Rams' promotion season in 2006/07. But an injury in the Championship play-off final meant he played a reduced role in their Premier League campaign.

He scored twice against Manchester United in the Carling Cup semi-final earlier this month and now has another chance to establish himself in the top flight.

Strachan to let Nakamura leave in summer

Gordon Strachan has given Shunsuke Nakamura his blessing to quit Celtic at the end of the season - but wants a Japanese holiday in return.

Midfielder Nakamura, 30, has expressed a desire to return to his homeland and raise his young family there after four trophy-laden years at Parkhead.

Strachan insists the Japan star - who struggles with the long journeys to and from international matches - has not approached him personally about a move.

But he will not stand in Nakamura's way should the player ask to return to his first senior club, Yokohama Marinos, this summer.

''Naka's never said he's going back,'' Strachan said.

''He hasn't mentioned his future plans. But if he said to me, 'I want to go home to play in Japan and show everybody what I've learnt playing at Celtic and overseas', we would just have to say, 'Thank you very much, it's been a great experience' - and hopefully get a holiday in Tokyo out of it.''

Strachan insists that, despite his talismanic qualities, Nakamura is not irreplaceable.

He said: ''How many can you not replace at a club like Celtic? Jock Stein, Jimmy Johnstone, and Henrik Larsson perhaps. There are not many you can't replace.''

Everton close to bringing in City's Jo on loan

Everton are poised to add Manchester City striker Jo to their squad before the transfer deadline.

The clubs are understood to be in talks over a proposed loan transfer which would see 21-year-old Jo move to Goodison Park for the rest of the season.

Brazilian striker Jo joined City in the summer from CSKA Moscow but has struggled to find form for Mark Hughes' team.

The former Corinthians frontman had been a huge success in Russian football and City paid around £19million to bring him to Eastlands.

At the time that was a club record fee, since surpassed by the £32.5million City spent on Robinho, however Jo has only scored three times, and two of those came in the UEFA Cup against Omonia Nicosia.

Everton urgently need strengthening in attack, having recently had to rely on midfielder Tim Cahill playing out of position as a central striker due to an injury crisis.

Frontmen Ayegbeni Yakubu and Louis Saha are among the players who manager David Moyes has been forced to cope without recently, and the proposed move could benefit both Everton and City if Jo sees regular action.

Jo's most recent appearance for City came in the FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest on January 3.

Russian playmaker Andre Arshavin's move from Zenit St Petersburg to Arsenal has been called off by the Gunners.

The 27-year-old Russia playmaker, who caught the eye in last summer's European Championships, was in place to undergo the formalities of the transfer if the two clubs reached agreement on a fee.

After being pictured in Hertfordshire, key figures in the deal said that Arshavin had left for an airport and the move was off, meaning only a late move from Arsenal would resurrect the transfer.

Zenit have done some business themselves this morning, signing Hungary midfielder Szabolcs Huszti from Hannover for a fee of around £2.6million - three years after the player joined the German club from Metz for approximately £260,000.

Hannover president Martin Kind said: "Szabi Huszti has scored some important goals in almost three years with us.

"Of course we will miss him. But we did not want to stand in the way of his personal plans."

Everton appear ready to take Brazilian striker Jo on loan from Everton, while Tottenham were widely reported to be in talks with Liverpool over Robbie Keane's return to White Hart Lane after an unhappy six months at Anfield.

In Italy, Inter Milan have left Ricardo Quaresma out of their updated Champions League squad, prompting reports he could be offered to Spurs in exchange for midfielder Jermaine Jenas.

The Portugal winger made six appearances for Inter in the group stages of Europe's elite club competition but has failed to impress since joining the Italian champions in the summer from Porto.

"I am disappointed with him," said Inter coach Jose Mourinho.

"He is a player that I wanted in Milan but unfortunately, he has not been able to overcome the criticism directed at him.

"Without confidence in oneself it becomes more difficult."

Also in Italy, Roma have signed defender Marco Motta on loan from Udinese.

The 22-year-old right-back has joined the capital giants on a six-month loan deal, with the club having an option to buy him in the summer for seven million euros (£6.3million).

Both Motta and Christian Panucci have been included in Roma's updated Champions League list.

Veteran defender Panucci will remain at the club until the end of the season, according to his agent.

The 35-year-old announced last week his wish to leave the Eternal City giants after failing to earn a regular starting spot.

"Christian will remain at Roma and will respect his contract," said Panucci's agent Oscar Damiani after reported interest in his client from English clubs Hull and Manchester City.

"We have not been able to resolve his situation.

"We haven't been able to reach an agreement, the offers we received were not considered good enough by the player."

Dutch club NEC Nijmegen have reached an agreement with FC Twente to take defender Ramon Zomer on a permanent contract following his loan spell. The club and player were due to hold contract talks today.

NEC have also signed striker John Goossens from Ajax on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

They would be stupid to let Quaresma go........... As for Arshavin well.... its our defence which neds strengthening tbh
