SEVEN people have been arrested on suspicion of plotting terror attacks on FBI offices and other federal buildings in the US, a law enforcement source said today.
The suspects were allegedly in the final days of plotting attacks on the Sears Tower in Chicago and other buildings in Miami.
No details on the alleged plot or the number of people were given, and the statement said the FBI would give more details later today.
The source, elaborating on a statement from Florida authorities, said the suspects had thought they were dealing with the international al-Qaeda group but had been infiltrated by a US government informant.
"Earlier today, the FBI, in conjunction with federal, state and local authorities, executed arrests as part of an ongoing investigation into a terrorist-related matter," a statement said. "The individuals arrested posed no immediate threat to our community."
CNN reported that the arrests took place in Liberty City, a poor neighbourhood north of Miami.
It said no weapons or bomb-making materials were found.
FBI director Robert Mueller told CNN television that operations were still taking place.
"I can tell you that we do have an ongoing operation in Miami. We are conducting a number of arrests and searches and we'll have more about that when the operation is concluded, probably (Friday) morning," Mr Mueller said.
"Because it's an ongoing operation, I really can't get into details. But whenever we undertake an operation like this, we would not do it without the approval of a judge. We've got search warrants and arrest warrants and the like."
The Attorneys Office statement said news conferences would be held in Washington and Miami to provide further details.
