The nominees for the Writers Guild of America's award for best original screenplay - often seen as a strong Oscars predictor - have been announced after a vote by Hollywood screenwriters.

Leading the nominations are 'Milk', written by Dustin Lance Black, a film about the life of gay rights activist Harvey Milk and 'The Wrestler', a Mickey Rourke vehicle about a fading sports star written by Robert Siegel.

Woody Allen's romantic comedy 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona', Joel and Ethan Coen's 'Burn After Reading' and Tom McCarthy's US immigration film 'The Visitor' are the other nominees.
The nominees for best adapted screenplay were also released yesterday with 'The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button', 'Doubt', 'Slumdog Millionaire', 'The Dark Knight' and 'Frost/Nixon' the selections.

The awards ceremony takes place on February 7.

With many of the voters belonging to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Writers Guild awards are often seen as a strong indicator of which films are likely to do well in the Oscar nominations, which are announced on January 22.
