Lara Croft is set to return in a new film based on the Tomb Raider computer game, it has been reported.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, though, Angelina Jolie is unlikely to return to the role she played in the first two big-screen adventures.

The project will be produced for Warner Brothers by Dan Lin, part of the team behind Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes.

Created by the London-based company Eidos, Tomb Raider has proved hugely popular and spawned several spin-offs.

The new project is expected to revamp its gun-toting heroine, with emphasis on the character's origins and romantic life.

Disappointing

Released in 2001, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - in which Jolie made her debut as the aristocratic heroine - made almost $275 million (£192m) worldwide.

Its follow-up - Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life - fared less well, however, making $156m (£109m) in 2003.

The most recent Lara Croft game, Tomb Raider: Underworld, was released last November.

According to Eidos, though, sales of the game fell below its forecasts, with US sales particularly disappointing.

Jolie received an Academy Award nomination earlier this month for her role in Clint Eastwood's film Changeling.
