A Chinese sword swallower ended up in hospital after he attempted to swallow a curved sword for the first time.
Wang Liang, of Dengta city, had performed with a straight sword for eight years with no problems, reports the Huashang Morning Post.
But his successful run ended when he agreed to a request from the audience to perform with a curved sword for the first time to make his act more eye-catching.
"While pushing the sword down, I felt sharp pains in my throat, so I immediately stopped and pulled the sword out," said Wang.
Chief surgeon Sun Lianhong, at the Central Hospital in Liaoyang, said the routine caused a 1.5cm cut in Wang's oesophagus.
"Without immediate treatment and surgery, the patient could have died from infection," he said.
Doctors successfully performed open chest surgery for four hours to repair the damage.
