A 46-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Brian McGrath at his home in Coole, Co Westmeath, in 1987.

Colin Pinder was arrested by gardaí at Dublin Airport shortly after 6pm yesterday and charged with the murder of Mr McGrath at Lower Coole on a date between 16 March and 18 April, 1987.

This morning, Athlone District Court was told Mr Pinder suffers from epilepsy.
Judge John Neilan remanded him in custody to appear again at a sitting of the district court in Cloverhill on Tuesday.

The judge directed that Mr Pinder be medically and psychiatrically assessed. He also said he should be treated with medication prescribed by his doctor for epilepsy during his time in custody.

Gardaí acting on confidential information searched land in the Coole area and found the remains buried in a field in November 1993.

They believed efforts had been made to set the body alight before it was secretly buried.

When the body was initially found it could not be identified. A number of people were questioned by gardaí but no prosecution was taken.

Last year, the body was exhumed as scientific advances led gardaí to believe the remains were those of Mr McGrath.
