A schoolteacher from Belfast has been remanded in custody after pleading guilty to downloading thousands of images of children being abused.

Appearing at Craigavon Crown Court, 52 year-old Steven Vincent Colton admitted 30 charges of making indecent photographs of children on dates between March 2004 and January last year.

Colton, formerly of Broom Park in Twinbrook but now with an address at Ballygoskin Road in Crossgar, Co Down, taught history and politics at Sullivan Upper Grammar School in Holywood until his arrest a year ago.
A prosecution lawyer told Judge Patrick Markey that the 30 counts were specimen charges, five of which are in the highest and most grave category.

He also revealed that around 67,000 still images and approximately 13,000 movie images were involved.

A defence solicitor said Colton would not be applying for bail but he applied for sentencing to be adjourned to allow for the preparation of probation reports.

Colton was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced next month.
