A five-year-old girl has been taken into care after being found barefoot and dressed in pyjamas a quarter of a mile from her home.

She was discovered in the snow in Omagh last Thursday at about 0500 GMT.

The girl was found by staff at a Supervalu store. They wrapped her in a sweater and placed her by a heater before calling the police.

A man and a woman were arrested in connection with the incident but have been released.

A PSNI spokesman said: "At about 5.30am on Thursday, police received a report from a member of the public that he had seen a young girl in her pyjamas at Market Street.

"Police collected the girl and followed her footsteps in the snow to a house.
"Further enquiries into the matter are being conducted by police and social services."

Local councillor and GP Josephine Deehan said the child's life was undoubtedly at risk.

"The weather conditions were among the worst that we have seen this winter, freezing cold temperatures, snow under foot...

"She was dressed only in her pyjamas and barefoot, and could easily have succumbed to hypothermia."
