Six people were killed in a head-on crash on a rural road, police said.

Two police officers on a routine patrol came across the crash on the A614 Old Rufford Road near Bilsthorpe, Nottinghamshire, shortly after 11pm on Friday.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman said the crash involved a Peugeot 206 travelling southbound along the carriageway and a Ford Fiesta heading in the opposite direction. Both cars burst into flames after the impact.

A police spokesman said the two people travelling in the Fiesta were a couple in their 60s. The four people in the Peugeot were all in their late teens and early 20s. All six were from the north Nottinghamshire area.

Dental records will be used to identify the bodies, such was the ferocity of the blaze.

Superintendent Bruce Cameron, who described the crash as a "dreadful accident", said: "The fire damage was very very substantial and all six people were sadly pronounced dead at the scene."

The scene had been "distressing" for emergency service personnel, he added.

Mr Cameron said the two police officers who discovered the crash "risked their lives" in a bid to pull the victims free of the burning wreckage.

The officers managed to reach the woman in the Fiesta but she was already dead when they pulled her out, he said.

He also commended firefighters and officers who worked through the night at the scene.
