Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban could be venturing into the NHL, if reports are true.
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh Penguins owner Mario Lemieux has made no secret of the fact that his hockey team is for sale.
On Tuesday morning, fans got the news for which they had been waiting -- a potential group of buyers with local ties has surfaced, and it would most likely keep the team in Pittsburgh.
Andy Murstein, president of New York-based Medallion Financial Corp., told ESPN Radio 1250's Tim Benz that Mark Cuban and Dan Marino have partnered into his group to make an offer for the Penguins.Cuban already owns the Dallas Mavericks, which reached the NBA Finals this season. He is a native of Mount Lebanon and was interested in buying a piece of the Pens years ago, before Lemieux's purchase.
Marino, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, grew up in Oakland and played quarterback for Central Catholic High School, the University of Pittsburgh and the NFL's Miami Dolphins.
"We've had conversations with both of them over the past couple of weeks," Murstein told Benz. "They did their due diligence on us and are happy to join our group."The Penguins had no comment on Tuesday morning.
Murstein's group has already given the Penguins $100,000 in hand money. The asking price for the team is in the $150 million to $170 million range.
In the past, Murstein has said that Mellon Arena, the Pens' aging home, is an issue. But he also said he won't move the team and will try to find a way to get a new arena for Pittsburgh instead.
