Online gaming as a whole continues to rise, with overall percentages rising from 19 percent to 25 percent according to the NPD Group (via Kotaku). But you might surprised to know who is playing online.

Not surprisingly, the Xbox 360 is on top, with 50 percent of its owners playing online according to the NPD survey. What is surprising is that the Nintendo Wii claims second place, with 29 percent playing online. The PlayStation 3 rounds out the group.

The number of teenagers playing online continues to increase, with online gamers aged 13 to 17 jumping from 17 percent to 22 percent. Meanwhile, 18 to 34 year olds and 35 to 54 years old dipped slightly.

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners also continue to download more content. This, however, might not be surprising when you consider the Wii's relative lack of memory.

The report is based on online survey responses from 20,000 members of the NPD's online consumer panel, with respondents starting at the age of 2. After that, the data was weighted to represent the total U.S. population, with fieldwork also being conducted in January.
