A weapons defence system is being developed by Australian companies modelled on how insects such as bees avoid colliding into each other in mid air.

The Defence Department, through the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO), has funded research at the Australian National University (ANU) studying how bees forage and navigate.

The device, which is called Bioseeker and was unveiled at the Avalon 2009 Airshowby Defence Science Minister Warren Snowdon, will go through its final test in six months before it comes on to the market.

Project manager Philip Henschke says the Bioseeker is a low-cost seeker and guidance system that will eventually be reduced to the size of a coffee cup.

He says it could be placed inside the 70mm rocket that is used on the Tiger Attack helicopter of the Australian Army.

Mr Snowdon said that the Bioseeker research would lead to a new weapons capability which would allow Australia's defence force to hit moving targets in the air and on land.
