Dell plans to announce in the next few days new servers and services offerings, the company's chief executive said Tuesday.

"We have a very big announcement coming in the next few days around the Intel Nehalem architecture, our eleventh-generation enterprise architecture, along with new improvements in our services offering and enhancements to our EquilLogic storage offering," said Michael Dell at a Tokyo news conference.

Dell has scheduled a news conference in San Francisco for Thursday morning at which the announcements, further details of which were not available on Tuesday, are expected to be made.

Intel is expected to announce next week the launch of the Nehalem EP microprocessors and has allowed server vendors to begin disclosing their plans for the chip ahead of the official launch.

Apple was first in line when it announced on March 3 new Mac Pro workstations that are powered by Xeon 3500 and 5500 quad-core chips, which are part of the Nehalem EP family. On Tuesday Lenovo became the second major vendor to back Nehalem EP. Shortly after Dell finished speaking in Tokyo it announced its high-end ThinkStation D20 and low-end ThinkStation S20 workstations will run on Xeon 3500 and 5500 series chips.
