Great horror and Saw aren't exactly synonymous these days, not with the series already on its way to a sixth entry in as many years. Nevertheless, according to Variety's Cut Scene blog, Konami has high hopes for the upcoming video game adaptation, the rights for which they recently acquired from Lionsgate.

"Because we have leadership in the survival horror genre, we're passionate about it and wanted to find another property on par with Silent Hill," said Konami director of marketing David Daniels. "Saw has grossed over $600 million worldwide and sold over 16 million DVDs, so we felt like it was a great opportunity to align ourselves with one of the most successful horror film franchises in history."

Konami picked up the rights to saw after publisher Brash Entertainment went bankrupt last fall. At the moment, Zombie Studios is handling development, while Konami is set to publish.

"One of the big pillars of Saw is the maniacal, twister serial killer Jigsaw's very unusual traps and you can expect that's something we'll carry forward," explained Daniels. "Some traps will even be a direct translation from the movies, particularly the iconic ones fans love."

The game's launch will coincide with the release of Saw VI later this year, and should be every bit as gory. Daniels promises that Saw will be rather different from Silent Hill, saying he wants the former to be more about "graphic, intense horror that overwhelms you."

"We want players to turn away from the screen for just a moment because of the visual intensity," he said.

We'll see whether or not Konami is on to something here later this year.--
