Rockers Coldplay have sent their attorneys into court to defend them against a lawsuit from Joe Satriani over their hit song Viva La Vida.

The guitarist sued the Yellow hitmakers in December (08), accusing them of copying segments from his 2004 instrumental If I Could Fly to use in their 2008 track.

The band publicly denied the claims and they have now hit back in a US federal court - lawyers for the group filed a response in Los Angeles on Monday (06Apr09) alleging Satriani's song "lacks originality" and therefore shouldn't receive copyright protection.

Coldplay's legal team also state any similarities between the songs aren't significant enough to warrant damages.

Satriani - who has played with Mick Jagger and Deep Purple - is seeking a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" from Coldplay's song.
