The economic downturn affects everyone. From bringing lunch to work to skipping the morning Starbucks coffee, everyone is pinching their pennies. For the fashion conscious, though, this causes a dilemma: do we sacrifice cutting-edge fashions to eat, or smoke cigarettes or drive our cars? In San Francisco and the Bay Area, though, we have options.

While the economy hits consumers hard, it hits businesses harder. More and more shops are closing because of a negative turn in spending and businesses will do anything to drive business. Bloomingdales and Nordstrom are putting more recent product on sale. Discount retail stores such as TJ Maxx and Marshalls are putting all of their stock on sale and even boutiques are heavily discounting to drive business into their stores. This opens up an opportunity to take advantage of these discounts and sales to outfit ourselves and our homes in new fashions and designs.

Taking advantage of the sales helps more than just us, the consumer; it helps the businesses increase their numbers and helps them survive this recession. Unique stores such as Jeremy’s on 2nd Street in San Francisco and other boutique retail stores have to work hard to keep business up even in bull markets and especially in a market such as this. So get out there, support your local businesses and update your look for budget prices at the same time.
