Miley Cyrus can now add animal rights activists to her list of admirers.

The teenage star reportedly adopted a chicken from the set of Hannah Montana: The Movie.

Her act of kindness has seen her rewarded with a Compassionate Citizen Award from campaign group Peta.

The actor and singing star apparently felt sorry for the chickens used in the film because "they were sad to be working".

Having decided to take one home with her as a companion, she also packed up a few of the others to be sent home to their mother.

It isn't the first time that Miley has shown herself to be an animal lover.

Last year, she and country singing father Billy Ray found a lost dog, staying with it until its owner could be found.

Dan Shannon, Peta's assistant director of youth outreach and campaigns, said: "Miley's heart is as big as her smile."

He added: "We hope that her act of compassion will inspire her fans to be kind to animals too."
