Ian Bell sent a clear message to the England selectors by scoring the first century of the County Championship season on day two at Taunton.

Resuming on 84, Bell was eventually caught behind off Ben Phillips (4-100) for 172 from 272 deliveries.

Jim Troughton (77), Tim Ambrose (57) and Chris Woakes (63) also contributed as Warwickshire were dismissed for 500.

Somerset started well in reply, with openers Marcus Trescothick (27) and Arul Suppiah (31) both undefeated.

Warwickshire started the day on 189-3 and cruised to 220 before Troughton edged Charl Willoughby to third slip where Phillips held a juggling catch, ending a fourth-wicket stand with Bell of 154.

Bell was eventually dismissed after lunch when wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter held on to a brilliant leg-side catch when the England batsman attempted to leg glance Phillips.

Rikki Clarke (0) and Ambrose quickly followed but Somerset's hopes of wrapping up the innings were dealt a blow by 20-year-old Woakes, who reached his maiden Championship half-century and shared in a last-wicket partnership of 67 with James Anyon.

Trescothick and Suppiah safely negotiated Somerset to the close of play, but the home side still require another 281 to avoid the follow-on.
