Legendary broadcaster John Madden announced his retirement today. But for those worried that his name will suddenly vanish from the equally legendary NFL series, have no fear. According to EA Sports representative David Tinson (via Gamasutra), EA has a "long term contract with Madden."

EA Sports president Peter Moore, meanwhile, said in a statement, "We're excited to see [Madden's] legacy live on in the 21st year of Madden NFL Football, and well beyond."

"It's been a privilege for EA Sports to have had the strong relationship we've had with John for more than two decades and one that will continue into the future."
Moore went on to call Madden a "true sports icon who has made an indelible impact on the sport of football which will be felt forever." Electronic Arts certainly has reason to be grateful, as the Madden franchise continues to be one of the largest and most profitable in the industry.

So even with Madden's retirement, the franchise bearing his namesake marches on. Look for Madden NFL 10 on August 14.--
