MOBILE company 3 has launched a new 3G network that it says will increase its mobile broadband coverage to 96 per cent of the population.

The roaming capacity will expand on 3's current broadband network, and allow customers in remote areas to receive broadband internet on their mobile.

The announcement pushes the network to equal second in overall coverage with Optus, but remains three per cent short of Telstra's advertised broadband network.

3's director of sales, marketing and product Noel Hamill said the importance of social networking and people's desire to access the internet on the go made improving their network coverage a priority.

"Social networking sites and search engines such as Google are part of everyday life," he said.

The announcement comes after a report revealed that advertised mobile broadband coverage is less than actual figures, and can differ by up to half.

The report – by telecommunications research company Market Clarity – says the statistics provided by telco's are misleading.
Market Clarity chief executive Shara Evans said the findings meant the methods used by the industry to calculate their population coverage clearly needed to be changed.
