AB de Villiers' unbeaten 105 proved the difference as Delhi Daredevils held off a furious run chase from the Chennai Super Kings.

De Villiers helped his team to 189 for five but it looked as though Chennai would surpass them as Matthew Hayden's thrilling 57 off just 27 balls set the tone for a massive response.

But the middle order could not maintain the pace as Mahendra Singh Dhoni went for five, Andrew Flintoff 16 and Subramaniam Badrinath seven and the run rate collapsed in the final overs and they lost by nine runs on Thursday.

Chennai made 57 off the first five overs before Parthiv Patel went for 16, caught by De Villiers at cover, but Hayden carried on undaunted, and scored 19 - with two sixes and a four - in the seventh over, with the score further boosted by five wides.

But the former Australia international went for one big shot too many as he was caught by Dirk Nannes at long on off Pradeep Sangwan.

After Dhoni's cheap departure, Suresh Raina kept Chennai well on course for victory with a quick 41 from 27 deliveries before he too was caught by De Villiers on the boundary.

Flintoff, denied the chance to face his England team-mates Paul Collingwood and Owais Shah who were left out of the Delhi team, was subject to a big appeal for leg before on first delivery, and never really got going with any fluidity before he was caught by substitute David Warner at long-off for 16 off 17 balls.

The late dismissals of Badrinath, Manpreet Gony, Joginder Sharma and Lakshmipathy Balaji completed the collapse as Chennai finished on 180 for nine.

Earlier, Delhi's innings got off to an inauspicious start with Gautam Gambhir out first ball, edging behind to Dhoni.
Moments later, they were reduced to eight for two when Virender Sehwag gave Albie Morkel an easy catch at mid-on.

But that brought Tillakaratne Dilshan to the crease, and his 50 off just 27 balls got Delhi back on the right track.

After hitting seven fours and two sixes, he was eventually undone by a full toss from Morkel, sending the ball straight to Suresh Raina at extra cover.

De Villiers leads Daredevils to victory

De Villiers was playing at a steadier pace, but kept the score ticking over even as Dinesh Karthik played a poor shot against his Ranji team-mate Balaji to find the hands of Flintoff for 18.

As De Villiers reached his half-century, he was dropped by Morkel, and he made Chennai pay as he upped the run rate to reach his century.

Balaji claimed the wicket of Manoj Tiwary in the final over, but Delhi had already posted a big total.
