The Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 4-1 to sweep the three-game series to complete a 10 game winning streak.

With the contest tied at 1-1, David Ortiz doubled in the go-ahead run before Kevin Youkilis was walked intentionally to load the bases to allow Ellsbury to surprise New York left-hander Andy Pettitte with JD Drew at the plate.

Ellsbury beat out Jorge Posada's tag before Drew added a fourth with a ground-rule double as the Red Sox moved three games clear of the third-placed Yankees in the East.

Toronto remain a game clear of Boston at the top of the East after Scott Rolen hit the game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning to score Vernon Wells as the Blue Jays won their sixth straight series this season with a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox.

Roy Halladay (4-1) allowed three runs off eight hits in seven innings, while Rod Barajas had three hits for the Blue Jays, who have won eight of 11 games.

Detroit claimed top spot in the Central Division after Brandon Inge hit a two-run homer in the second inning to support six solid innings from Armando Galarraga as the Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 to leapfrog Chicago.

In Cleveland, Aaron Laffey pitched into the seventh inning to lift the Indians to a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Twins and a three-game sweep.

Laffey (2-0) allowed two runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings, while Ryan Garko's two-run single in the third stretched Cleveland's lead to 4-0.

At the Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Howie Kendrick homered and had a career-high four RBIs to rout the Seattle Mariners 8-0.

Jered Weaver (2-1) allowed three hits over seven innings before two relievers combined to round off the five-hitter.

Elsewhere, Adam Jones hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning as the Baltimore Orioles rallied to record a 8-5 victory over the Texas Rangers, while Kurt Suzuki drove in three runs and Dana Eveland pitched into the sixth inning as every Oakland Athletics starter had at least one hit in a 7-1 win over Tampa Bay Rays.
