The singer, who visited London for a gig at the O2 Arena, wrote Funhouse in the aftermath of her split from motocross rider Carey Hart.
She said: "Funhouse is a little bit more about the break than any other album has been.
"I drink lots of wine and eat lots of chocolate but I have a pen in one hand and a microphone in the other.
The star said she decided to go over the painful territory after being inspired by the music that helped her get through difficult times as a teenager.
"That's what music was for me when I was a kid, it was other people being able to speak my pain more eloquently than I could."
