"We've had a lot of hurdles to overcome with this movie," Chris Aronson from studio 20th Century Fox told E! Online.
"At the end of the day, audiences have a huge appetite for Hugh."
It seems that Hugh, currently People magazine's Sexiest Men Alive, managed to draw in more female moviegoers - 47% of the weekend's audience were women, which is a higher turnout than previous X-Men films.
And the studio said audiences were also clearly charmed by Hugh's appearance as this year's Academy Awards host.
"What other explanation is there?" added Chris Aronson. "That turn just made him that much more appealing."
