Following a string of leaks and rumors that made it one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry, Activision has finally officially announced the next installment of their band-focused Guitar Hero games: Guitar Hero: Van Halen (via GameSpot).

Confirming the game at last at a Los Angeles press event, Activision at least seemed to have a sense of humor about the numerous leaks. "You've heard about this, maybe some rumors, but I am here to officially announce the title, which is coming out in the second half of this year," said Will Kassoy, senior vice president of Guitar Hero publishing (a position that shows just how huge the Guitar Hero franchise is, considering it requires its own senior vice president of publishing).

Not many details were given, but Kassoy did reveal some of the other bands that will also appear in the game. In addition to the obvious litany of Van Halen songs sure to be included, players will also find music by Queen, Weezer, Blink 182, The Offspring, Queens of the Stone Age, and "many, many more." No specific songs were confirmed.

Also not yet revealed are what platforms the game will be released on, although we'd be fools to expect anything less than the standard array of Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii. This confirmation, of course, follows the announcement of three other Guitar Hero games earlier this week, making for four new games coming sometime in the near future. That's a whole lot of rock and/or roll.
