The Australian soldiers who and killed the Iraqi Trade Minister's bodyguard in a 'friendly fire' incident in Baghdad, have been cleared of any wrongdoing by a Defence Department investigations.

The Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshall Angus Houston says the men believed they were under attack when the Minister's four-wheel-drive vehicle swerved erratically in front of their armoured vehicle.

It also broke through an Iraqi roadblock and ignored commands for it to stop.

Air Chief Marshall Houston says the soldiers opened fire until they were confident the vehicle no longer posed a threat.

He says also that Australia is providing assistance to an Iraqi civilian injured in the incident.
