Guitar Hero is the game most often credited with making the rhythm genre a billion dollar industry by itself, thanks in large part to its appeal to mainstream audiences. Activision, however, things that DJ Hero will be even more mainstream.
"It's certainly hitting a more mainstream and expanded audience from Guitar Hero. I think it will build on what Guitar Hero has been able to do," Activision CEO Michael Griffith told GamesIndustry.biz.

"If you look at what our Guitar Hero franchise has achieved, we now have 15 million households that are active Guitar Hero users and we continue to satisfy them with more experiences and the chance to indulge in more music and gameplay."

However, outside of those 15 million households, "there's another 300 million that haven't for one reason or another bought Guitar Hero yet." Activision hopes that DJ Hero will be able to grab that audience.

"One of those reasons is we're not reaching new genres and new music audiences in a way that DJ Hero allows us to accomplish. DJ Hero is going to be expansive to the franchise and be particularly exciting for Europe where that genre of music is arguably more important than it is elsewhere."

If, for whatever reason, DJ Hero doesn't work out though, Activision still has the old standbys for this fall. Two more Guitar Hero titles are currently in development.

DJ Hero will be arriving on the PlayStation 3, PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii on October 27.
