A 31-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy suffered bullet wounds at the hands of a gunman wearing a crash helmet at Harry Morgan in St John's Wood, north London.

Former pop singer Stevens and the BBC journalist Hugh Pym were among diners forced to dive for cover at around 9pm on Friday.

A spokeswoman for Stevens said: "Rachel and her family were in a restaurant where there was gunfire. It was very frightening for everyone there but none of the diners were hurt."

The two people who were wounded were in the delicatessen part of the restaurant buying takeaway food when the attacker opened fire, the Metropolitan Police said.

The man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg while the boy was hit in the arm.

They are both in a stable condition with non life-threatening injuries, Scotland Yard said.

Mr Pym, the BBC's chief economics correspondent, said: "I immediately went to ground and pulled my 15-year-old son under the table. We were aware of a guy running through.

"He didn't appear as if he had a weapon - it felt like he was the victim. We were under the table and everyone was shouting 'stay down, stay down'.

"People were pretty shaken up and were wailing in shock more than anything else".
