Fans of the Royal Family can sign up to follow their activities on the online social networking site Twitter.

A spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace said the page would be run as a news and information service with lists of engagements and updates to royal websites.

She said: "The Queen has been advised that it's up and running but there won't be any members of the Royal Family tweeting."

Among the first tweets are links to pictures of the Queen meeting Poet Laureate Professor Carol Ann Duffy at Buckingham Palace and YouTube footage of the changing of the guard.

Other famous tweeters include Stephen Fry, Richard Branson and Lily Allen.

San Francisco-based Twitter started as a side project in March 2006 when founder Jack Dorsey wanted to know what his friends were doing.

The first prototype was built in two weeks and launched publicly in August of the same year, growing rapidly and becoming Twitter Inc in May 2007.

More than 450 people have signed up to the page at http://twitter.com/BritishMonarchy, which is being run by teams at Buckingham Palace and Clarence House.
