The 19-year-old, who has played the boy wizard's sidekick Hermione Granger in all six films, admitted it will be difficult to avoid being typecast in the future.

But she said her plans to study in the US do not mean she is shelving her movie career, and she is determined to move on after the Harry Potter series comes to an end.

Watson said: "I think it's going to be hard. I think audiences will identify me with that character for a long, long time.

"I've just got to try to convince directors that I can play other roles. It would be very naive of me not to be aware that that might be an issue, but it's not impossible."

She added: "The media don't really understand my decision to go to university. They think that's a bit odd, so they're saying it means I'm giving up acting, which it doesn't at all - it means I'm taking a bit of a break for a couple of years."
