Wondering when that PlayStation 3 price cut will materialize? It may be soon, especially with Sony having reportedly reduced PS3 production costs by 70 percent, Edge is reporting.
"The cost reduction since we introduced the PS3 is very substantial and this is on schedule," Sony executive vice president and chief financial officer Nobuyuki Oneda said during a press conference.

"We don't disclose how much of the PS3, specifically the cost deduction was achieved during the past two years. But that is on schedule."

When pressed, he clarified with, "70 percent, roughly speaking."

According to Edge, that would mean that the PS3 would cost as little as $240 per unit to manufacture, giving Sony plenty of room for a substantial price cut.

Such a price cut has been rumored for some time now, but it has yet to materialize. Word is that Sony will announce the reduction at Gamescom, which will be running from August 19-23. We'll keep you informed as we hear new information.
