Desmond Bacchus, 22, was visiting his ex-partner and nine-month-old girl Maylayah Delaney in Gloucester when he took her without explanation.
He left the house without informing the child's mother at around 11.30am on Monday and has not been seen since.
Maylayah was wearing a pink and white horizontally-striped Gap outfit when she was taken.
Mr Bacchus left the address in a green Honda Civic, registration N534YHN, and is thought to have gone to the Birmingham area.
Gloucestershire police said they had already carried out "extensive searches" for the pair.
They have made an "urgent appeal" for information and asked Mr Bacchus to contact them.
The child's mother, aged 24, has not been named by police. She may make an appeal if the situation continues, a force spokeswoman said.
Detective Chief Inspector Neil Kelly said: "Our priority is to ensure Maylayah's safety and well-being and I urge Desmond, and anyone who knows where they are or who may have seen them, to contact us immediately."
