Backbone Entertainment, the same developer responsible for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, is hard at work on another remake of a classic game, this time the TurboGrafx-16 turn-based strategy game Military Madness. Called Military Madness: Nectaris (the series was always called Nectaris in Japan), this remake is in development for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii, and today a new post on the PlayStation Blog provided the first solid details of what we can expect.
For those unfamiliar, Military Madness was a turn-based hexagonal strategy game that was, in a lot of ways, the precursor to Intelligent System's Advance Wars series on the Game Boy Advance and DS. By the sound of it, it seems this remake won't be quite as thorough as HD Remix, as it'll mostly be a recreation of the original game but with "the prerequisite spiffy new graphics and built-from-the-ground-up AI," according to designer Kyle Vincent Tunison, who authored the post. The single player campaign will consist of the same 32 missions from the original title, which breaks down to 16 missions for the normal campaign and 16 for the advance campaign.

The more exciting new features, then, are in the multiplayer. It'll include both online and local play for up to four players (including a pass-the-controller mode for local play, seeing as in it's a turn-based game); 10 multiplayer maps, designed specifically for 2, 3, or 4 players, with the option to add AI-controlled squads if you don't have three living friends who want to join in; and best of all, 10 new vehicle upgrades and 10 new support abilities for a brand-new Commander squad, which is described as "highly versatile."

Unfortunately, the one thing that wasn't revealed was a specific release date, although it seems Military Madness: Nectaris isn't too far off -- in a comment, Tunison writes that "Summer 09 is as specific as I can get at the moment... but we're in the home stretch!" He also revealed a demo would be released near the game's release.
