US musician Adam Goldstein — better known as DJ AM — has been found dead inside his New York apartment.
It is believed bottles of prescription medication and a pipe commonly used for smoking drugs were found near his body, website TMZ.com reported.
Goldstein had reportedly been sober for nine years, but people close to the musician told the website his recent breakup with girlfriend Hayley Wood had caused him to relapse.
A video posted online by Ms Wood earlier this month (shown above) shows the couple apparently happy and having fun while on vacation in France.
Fire crews are believed to have found Goldstein's body after a friend knocked on his door and got no response.
The TMZ report, which quoted unnamed sources, said Goldstein had not been seen or heard from for days.
Goldstein made headlines last year when he and former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker survived a light plane crash which killed four others.
Goldstein suffered third-degree burns in the crash and his recovery reportedly required extensive rehabilitation.
The former member of the rock band Crazy Town was once involved in a long-term relationship with reality TV star Nicole Richie.
Goldstein and Richie began dating in 2004 and announced their engagement a year later in February 2005.
But the wedding was called off and the pair officially ended their relationship in March 2006.
Goldstein was last seen in public at the weekend, when he threw the first pitch at a professional baseball game in New York.
He last posted a message on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon, using the first line from the Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five song "New York, New York".
"New York, New York. Big city of dreams, but everything in New York ain't always what it seems," the message read.
