What Saturday night’s crowd lacked in numbers, they compensated for in energy.

Total Non-stop Action, Spike TV’s original wrestling entertainment program also known as TNA, made its first stop in Abilene Saturday night, drawing hundreds from the city and surrounding area to the Taylor County Coliseum.

Each wrestler who burst through the blue curtain was showered with flashing red light and either screaming cheers or resounding boos.

“I’ve been waiting for this all week,” said Chris Swain, devoted TNA fan who recently moved to Abilene. “This is going to be awesome.”

TNA broadcaster Jeremy Borash brought the crowd to life within the first minute when he announced a contest in which every spectator would compete.

“Tonight, if you are making the most noise in your area, a TNA official will come out and thank you for making so much noise; then that TNA official will take you directly backstage,” Borash said.

The deafening cheer carried over into the first match, which featured the overwhelmingly booed Kiyoshi and the crowd favorite, “from 20,000 leagues under the sea,” Shark Boy.

After several failed attempts by both opponents to pin the other, Shark Boy seized the opportunity for a “shoulder neckbreaker,” leaving Kiyoshi lying motionless. Shark Boy pinned Kiyoshi to the mat for three full counts, igniting the crowd.

Shark Boy’s victory was followed by a match between “the toughest, most deadly, most violent, and most dangerous ladies in wrestling,” according to Borash: The Beautiful People versus Sarita and Hamada.

Turner Wade, 9-year-old TNA fan from Haskell, pointed at the exiting Shark Boy with one hand while forming a shark fin on top of his head with the other. Wade, who attended the event with his mother Holly Reed, said he watches TNA almost every night on TV, even if he has to watch by himself.

“It has a lot of extreme stuff in it,” Wade said. “I want that backstage pass bad.”

TNA stars Kurt Angle, The British Invasion, “The Monster” Abyss, “The Boss” Bobby Lashley, Team 3D and Sheik Abdul Bashir also made appearances Saturday night.
