A turtle has dumbfounded scientists by sticking to only British territories while swimming its way through the Caribbean on a 550-mile journey.

Suzie the adult green turtle has skipped non-British nations on her month-long trip.

Her progress has been followed by researchers who placed a satellite tracking device on her shell.

"This is the first time that turtles from Turks and Caicos have been tracked and we didn't know where they would go," Peter Richardson, of the Marine Conservation Society, told The Times.

"We thought she might head to neighbouring countries. We certainly wouldn't have predicted that she would go from one British Overseas Territory to another."

Since setting off at the beginning of September, Suzie has visited the waters of the British Virgin Islands, avoiding Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

She stayed there for a week before moving on to Anguilla.

Mr Richardson said. "The first part of her journey was against the current, so she wasn't being carried. We're not quite sure what she's up to. The mating season is almost over, so we have to assume she's heading to feeding grounds, but it could be that she's a very late breeder."
