School authorities in Poland have refused to withdraw a children's book about a pair of gay penguins from their bookshelves - despite threats from a neo-Nazi protest group. The book, And Tango Makes Three, tells the story of a penguin chick bring brought up by two gay dads. Aimed at children as young as five, it is based on the real-life story of Roy and Silo, a pair of male Chinstrap Penguins at New York's Central Park Zoo who raised a chick. The book has proved controversial in many countries - it has topped the list of the books people most frequently asked to be banned from public libraries in the USA every year since 2006.

But education chiefs in Gdansk have refused to take it off school shelves, despite threats from the extreme right-wing organisation All Polish Youth - a notoriously homophobic group with neo-Nazi links, which has been involved in violent attacks on gay tolerance marches. 'We are not afraid and will continue to promote this book. Those who are opposed to this book will have to deal with it,' said one kindergarten head, Ewa Ziolkowska.
