When you swim with the sharks, be prepared to get bitten.

That's a warning one worker at a sea life centre might be thinking he should have listened to.

The 23-year-old suffered multiple wounds after he was 'ambushed' by an angel shark while diving in its tank. He was left nursing between 15 and 20 lacerations on an arm, each roughly 1cm long.

The angel shark, also known as a monkfish, is an ambush predator which lies in wait for unsuspecting prey to venture close enough before attacking. They can grow up to 1.5m (5ft) long.

The incident happened at Deep Sea World, in Fife, near Edinburgh, during a conservation exercise as part of European Shark Week.

'A member of staff had received an injury while diving in the aquarium's main ocean display,' bosses said in a statement. 'Initial reports would indicate the male member of staff received cuts after apparently being bitten by an angel shark.'

A full inquiry into Saturday's incident has begun, it added.

Ambulance crews said the diver suffered at least 15 puncture wounds but did not go to hospital.

Angel sharks are now rare around Britain's coastline. They grow very slowly and few reach maturity because of over-fishing.

sharks are natural predators... things like this are bound to happen - that's the risk you take with a job like that
