Devotees of the Chinese Shrine of Lim Hu Tai Shi have their cheeks pierced by an assortment of metal items, during street parade to mark the annual Vegetarian Festival in Phuket, Thailand.
The festival has Chinese origins; held during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar, it is believed to cleanse the body.
The ritual piercings involve a spirit medium, and consumption of only vegetarian foods.
The festival runs for ten days and involves nine street processions featuring 'devotees' who pierce their bodies with an assortment of weapons and implements.
