GUNMEN have killed seven people and wounded at least 12 others in a rampage at Fort Hood military base in Texas, US media and officials said.

One gunman was in custody, but another remained on the loose on the sprawling base in Killeen, Texas, MSNBC television reported, adding the shooter at large was believed to have a high-powered sniper rifle.

It added there was also speculation that there were possibly three gunmen.

Local congressman John Carter confirmed on MSNBC there had been a shooting at the base, saying the gunfire had erupted during a graduation ceremony in the soldier readiness centre.

He could not confirm reports of injuries.

Fort Hood is the largest US military base in the world and had been working to rehabilitate many soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, Mr Carter added.

Army personnel told a Fox news affiliate they were not sure if the victims were civilians or military personnel.

A message on Fort Hood's website - the headquarters of the Army 3rd Corps, the 4th Infantry Division and the 1st Cavalry Division - said it was closed, but gave no further details.

All those units have seen extensive duty in Iraq.

"Effective immediately. Fort Hood is closed,'' the website said.

"Organizations/units are instructed to execute a 100 per cent accountability of all personnel.

"This is not a Drill. It is an Emergency Situation."

Schools in the area were also locked down, MSNBC said.

At least 12 people have died in a mass shooting at a Texas military base, the "When the soldier ran by him, he saw the soldier didn't know it, but he was wounded.

"So, he went into the building and they stopped him, because he had been shot.

"He heard small arms and some rifle fire while he was there and that he thought they had one person that they had caught but there may be more, he didn't know.

"He understood there was more than one, that was all he said.''

Fort Hood has been working to rehabilitate many soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, Mr Carter added.US army says.

The gunmen were reported to be US Army soldiers.

One has been killed and two apprehended, according to AFP.

President Barack Obama had been informed of the shooting at the base in Killeen, in central Texas, a White House official said.

Sergeant Major Jamie Poston, a Fort Hood spokesman told CNN television, the military was "not sure right now'' what had happened.

Master Sergeant Tim Volkert at Fort Hood told AFP he was still "trying to confirm the exact numbers'' of dead and wounded.

Local congressman John Carter said the gunfire had erupted ahead of a graduation ceremony in the soldier readiness centre.

"I had a man on the scene, who is my regional director and former chaplin at Fort Hood, waiting to go to a graduation ceremony when a soldier came running up to him saying, 'Sir, don't go over there. They are - somebody is shooting over there','' Mr Carter told on MSNBC.

US PRESIDENT Barack Obama has called a shooting attack at the Fort Hood military base in Texas a "horrific outburst of violence".

Speaking in Washington, Mr Obama said details of the incident were still unclear.

"What we do know is that a number of American soldiers have been killed," he said.

"And even more have been wounded in a horrific outburst of violence."

At least 12 people, including a gunman, were killed and 31 wounded at the military facility after up to three gunmen opened fire, military officials said.

Mr Obama offered his "thoughts and prayers" to the families of the victims.

"These are men and women who have made the selfless and courageous decision to risk, and at times give their lives to protect the rest of us on a daily basis," he said.

"It's difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas.

"It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an army base on American soil."

Mr Obama said he had spoken to both Defence Secretary Robert Gates and Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and would receive "a constant stream of updates".

Information about the perpetrators of the attack and their motives remained unclear but Mr Obama pledged: "We will make sure that we get answers to every single question about this horrible incident."

AT least one American soldier went on a shooting rampage today in a sprawling Texas military base killing 11 people and wounding 31 others before being gunned down, army officials said.

Two other soldiers were arrested after the shooting spree and were being held as suspects, said Lieutenant General Bob Cone, commander at Fort Hood, the largest US military base in the world.

The soldier, identified as Army Major Malik Nidal Hasan, opened fire with two handguns in a busy processing center where troops go before being deployed on overseas missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lt Gen Cone told reporters the motive for the attack remained unclear.

"We don't know that right now. Again, this is all under investigation,'' he stressed, adding he believed the incident was now over.

US President Barack Obama, who had been kept informed of the shooting as the drama was tracked in the White House situation room, denounced the attack as "an horrific outburst of violence''.

"My immediate thoughts and prayers are with the wounded. And with the families of the fallen,'' Mr Obama said.

"It's difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas.

"It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an army base on American soil.''

Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison said Hasan was about to be deployed to Iraq.

"I am shocked and saddened by today's outburst of violence at Fort Hood that has cost seven of our brave service members their lives and has gravely injured others,'' she said.

"My heart goes out to their loved ones."

Lt Gen Cone confirmed that 12 people were dead including the shooter.

"At approximately 1:30 today, a shooter entered what we call the soldier readiness facility, where soldiers getting ready to deploy go for check ups and treatment. A shooter opened fire. That person was killed.

"As I said, the shooter was killed. He was a soldier."

Lt Gen Cone added that after a manhunt on the sprawling base in Killeen they had "apprehended two additional soldiers who are suspects, and I would go into the point that there were eyewitness accounts that there may have been more than one shooter.''

He said he had been stunned by the incident, adding "soldiers and family members and many of the great civilians that work here are absolutely devastated".

"I want to express my condolences to the soldiers, the families, and the civilians in this great community in central Texas.

"This is a tragedy, but we will work through it.''

Fort Hood has been working to rehabilitate many soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, local congressman John Carter told MSNBC.

Fort Hood is the headquarters of the Army 3rd Corps, the 4th Infantry Division and the 1st Cavalry Division.

All those units have seen extensive duty in Iraq.

In May 2007, five men suspected of being Islamic militants were arrested by the FBI as part of a plot to attack the US base in Fort Dix, New Jersey.

Four were sentenced in April to life imprisonment and the fifth to 30 years.

A US Army major firing two handguns killed 11 people and wounded 31 others in a shooting rampage at Fort Hood base in Texas, a prime point of deployment for US operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Army said the gunman was killed.

US broadcast media identified him as Major Malik Nidal Hasan and said he was a psychiatrist facing an upcoming deployment to Iraq.

There was no immediate official confirmation of his identity.

US Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas told FOX News: "I do know that he has been known to have told people that he was upset about going (to Iraq)."

US military officials say the shooter's motives were still unclear.

The incident at Fort Hood, the largest military installation in the world, was one of the worst killings reported on a US military base.

In May a US soldier at a base in Baghdad shot dead five fellow soldiers.

It raised new questions about the toll that six years of continuous fighting in Iraq and nearly eight years fighting in Afghanistan have taken on the US military and on individual soldiers, many of whom have been on several combat tours.

In today's incident, the shooter opened fire at about 13:30 CST (06:30 AEDT) at the Soldiers Readiness Processing Center, where soldiers were getting medical check-ups before leaving for overseas deployments, the Army said.

The shooter was killed by police, but not before he killed one civilian police officer.

Initial reports said two other soldiers had been detained as possible suspects.
