They include alleged mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and will be brought from the US military base at Guantanmo Bay, Cuba.

They were being prosecuted there, but the Obama administration has pledged to close the controversial prison and move some of the cases to traditional criminal courts.

The trials in New York are likely to provoke strong reactions, particularly as it was the city in which the World Trade Center's twin towers were destroyed killing nearly 3,000 people.

There are key US allies are against taking detainees from Guantanamo (GITMO) who have been cleared of terrorist connections.

While some of Obama's political foes in North America do not want the trials held on US soil.

The opposition from Republicans argue that GITMO already has the facilities to try and imprison the terrorism suspects. They also have said the communities that would house the prisoners could become targets for attacks.
