It may have been new price point, the sleeker Slim redesign, or the bonuses thrown in by many retailers; whatever the reason, the PlayStation 3 had a sales boom for the week of Black Friday, according to a press release from Sony. According to their estimates, the system sold 440,000 units for the week, significantly more than it sold in the entire month of October. "The 2009 holiday season got off to an amazing start for the PlayStation, with all key retailers showing a significant increase for the PS3, PSP, and key holiday titles over Black Friday and the holiday weekend," wrote SCEA's Patrick Seybold in a press release. "PlayStation 3 demand was at an all time high with the system selling more than 440,000 units for the week ending 11/29/09."

By comparison, Nintendo sold 550,000 Wii systems in the same period, more than the PS3 but not by the lead it once had. Microsoft hasn't released its own numbers for the week, only stating via a tweet from Aaron Greenberg that sales were double the previous week. Without anything to compare it to, though, that figure is hard to draw conclusions from. We'll see how everything shakes out when the November NPDs come in a few weeks.
